Alice W. Cheang is an assistant professor of classical and modern Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame. In her review, Cheang stated that author Zheng Yi was accusing the Chinese totalitarian regime:"(using).. mass slaughter and cannibalism as a political weapon in the 1960s", and again this nature of the regime has not changed during Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, when hundreds, if not thousands of students died a violent death.
